AABU Board

  • Brett Robson has had an inspirational National, International and Professional Career.

    As one of Australia’s first professional umpires in Minor League Baseball, Brett set the way for others to follow and following the end of his professional career, returned to Australia to become one of Australia’s best known and respected ABL Umpires.

    Brett is currently Baseball Australia’s, Umpiring Manager and is responsible for the appointment and management of umpires to ABL and National Charter and Junior Championships.

  • Matt Carter began his umpiring career in Junior Baseball in NSW 1996-2022. He attended the MLBAAP Umpire Academy 2003, 2004 and was a part of the Australian Sports Commission Elite Officiating Scholarship 2005,

    In 2005 Matt attended the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring before being added to the Claxton Shield Panel 2007-2010,

    Matt has been an ABF Instructor since 2005 and was a member of the NSW ABL Umpire Panel in 2010. AJLC Coordinator 2017-19.

    Matt is currently the NSW Director of Umpiring in a role he has held for the past 6 years overseeing what is the biggest group of umpires in Australia.

  • Neil Poulton began umpiring when he was 12.

    In the 38 years since Neil has represented Australia at 2 Olympics, 4 Senior World Cups, Intercontinental Cup, AA World Championships, World Baseball Classic and the ABL Asian Series along with 27 years with the ABL, IBLA and Claxton Shield.

    Neil is currently the State Umpiring Director in South Australia, a role he has held 3 times over the decades.

    Neil is a 1994 graduate of the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring.

    Neil is a 9 times umpire of the year in South Australia and won the Baseball Australia Offical of the year in 2006.

    Neil has umpired in 5 ABLCS and many ABL/Claxton Shield finals series.

    Now retired from ABL but still an active umpire at state level, Neil’s focus is to develop the next generation of national and international umpires.

  • Paul is the current QLD State Umpiring Director holding this position since 2006.

    Paul started officiating at Far North Coast Baseball in 2001 as part of an ACL recovery and became a member of FNCBUA in 2001.

    Paul became a member of QBUA in 2004.

    Paul attended the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring in January 2006.

  • Tom West is currently Australia’s only minor league umpire employed by MLB umpiring in the Gulf Coast, Northwest, South Atlantic, California, Eastern, International and Pacific Leagues

    Tom has umpired over 1200 professional games and is a 2012 Graduate of the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring.

    Tom joined ABL panel 2012 and has umpired in the last 5 ABLCS

    Tom also has degrees in both sport management and sport development.

  • Stewart brings over 40 years of umpiring experience to this role, having umpired over 5,300 games of baseball since he first started in 1982. He’s honoured to be so heavily involved in his beloved game, a true passion that has earned him five Umpire of the Year awards at the state and national level.

    As a leader in grassroots umpiring, Stewart has covered VSBL, ABL, and Australian Championship games. He’s also well-known on the global stage, having umpired in four WBSC Junior World Cups including 27 plate umpire appearances at international tournaments.

    In his role as Umpire Officer in Victoria, Stewart will make a positive difference to overall pathway development and promotion of baseball umpiring in Victoria.

  • David had the distinction of being the longest serving State Directors of Umpiring in Australia with 28 years continuous service and still going.

    David has umpired at every level in Australia and has continued to show a passion for umpire development in his state.

The inaugural AABU board is made up of representatives from states and territories tradionally involved in umpire development. Those included are either State Umpire Directors or Coordinators or are heavily involved at the National or International levels of umpiring in Australia. Combined this board has literally 100’s of years of both umpiring experience and knowledge around both Australian Baseball and Umpire Development.

Following our initial AGM later this year, future boards will be made up from representatives of each listed state and territory along with 2 additional individuals selected from around Australia for their knowledge and ability to contribute to the AABU core values.
